The Queen to Open Gallery of Indian Art at Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London will be part of an important cultural event when the Queen formally opens a new gallery to showcase Indian art in our midst. The creation of this new gallery demonstrates how much more each country has recognized the importance of Indian contemporary art.

The new gallery will showcase a range of artworks covering different eras, all of which have been hand-selected by curators of the gallery. The curators have chosen to display works representative of the diversity of artistic expression throughout South Asia.

A Milestone for Indian Contemporary Art

The Queen’s participation in the official opening of this gallery gives importance to contemporary Indian art on an international platform, as many international art institutions have recognised that the work of many well-known contemporary Indian artists is both innovative and profound during the last ten years.

Indian artists have begun to explore their own concepts and themes of heritage, migration, urbanization, and identity through their artwork. Many artists use both traditional methods of creation as well as modern approaches in their artwork.

The rapid growth of the Indian contemporary and modern art market is reflected in the expanding art market in India. Art galleries, auction houses, and museums across the world are recognising the collectors in Indian art galleries and exhibitions.

The Queen herself will take part in the opening ceremony. It will provide a cultural exchange and will give points of contact between curators, collectors, Ambassadors, as well as numerous others who play a crucial role in the global art community.

The creation of an exhibit at this gallery will elevate and have greater visibility for voices/points of view that are historically unrepresented in the South Asian art. It will also be a display of the tremendous diversity within India by way of its regions.

The formal launch of this exhibition will only be a celebration of art but will also make a statement regarding the direction of future museum practices across international borders. There is a growing recognition of the need to represent multiple global voices at institutions.

In addition, the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the launch of this gallery ushers in a new chapter for Indian art history in London. It reinforces the position of Indian artist’s global importance and the role of the Indian art market will have in shaping cultural conversations worldwide.
