The Historic Arts & Industries building represents our nation’s dedication to culture and artistry. Used to be just an old monument of time, but now will become a dynamic creative destination for traditional craftsmanship and shared community-based learning.
The goal of this preservation project has always been more than mere brick-and-mortar preservation. It is about preserving the heritage, talents, and stories that formed our ancestors. The building now acts as an actual connection between artisans from days past to today’s makers.
Visitors will learn about the importance of these historic buildings. From the exterior façades of the two buildings with their old world craftsmanship to the interiors, this project will serve as a reminder to many of the historic connections between their ancestors and themselves.
Local Artisans Rebuild Traditions
At the local artisans who were being lost as crafts continued to dissipate due to changes in lifestyle and lack of opportunities to display their talent. The building provides a place for artisans to practice their art, teach, and display their art.
Regularly scheduled craft classes on weaving, metalworking, pottery, etc. allow for the passing of traditional craft knowledge and techniques to the younger generations.
In providing education and preserving cultural knowledge, this initiative has created new economic opportunities for the artisans involved. There is a place to sell their handmade items to tourists, which not only throws a lifeline to the artists.
At the local elementary schools, help to provide educational experiences for all ages. Part of this educational outreach program includes organizing field trips for students to witness primarily the crafts’ production; by witnessing their production.
The revitalised space has attracted tourist interest, as visitors get an opportunity to enjoy ‘living traditions’, as opposed to merely looking at objects ‘behind glass’. This interactive approach means that visitors can relate better to and remember their experience of heritage sites.
Reviving the Historic Arts & Industries Building demonstrates that historical places can have new life. Heritage is therefore not only something to protect; that is something to experience, and to engage and to share.
