In Tokyo, teamLab’s giant new immersive space opens glittering portals of the imagination

Tokyo has been home to the intersection of technology and creativity; however, teamLab’s massive new immersive space has elevated this relationship to a completely different level. As a global leader in pushing the limits of the definition of art and technology, teamLab has introduced an experience that resembles less of an actual art museum and more of a completely separate dimension through the use of Digital Art.

When someone steps into this multi-sensory environment, the sensation of space and location disappears as if it were your own reality, with all surfaces being painted in vibrant colours and filled with kinetic energy. No device is static; instead, every device reacts to its user by changing shape.

Visitors can experience this very deep form of artistic expression through immersion in this unique space. You will be involved within the work of art, rather than simply observing the art piece. create ripples of light with your movement, make blooming digital flowers with footsteps, and  shadow will mix with the continuously changing visuals over your head.

The scale of this piece of art enhances it even further. Using light and mirrors has created such large areas that they give the feeling of going on forever – it is very difficult to see where reality and illusion meet or end. Visitors often stop thinking about time because of the glowing trees, the pouring waterfalls.

The Experience Invites Wonder

This exhibition’s nature evokes astonishment in ways most other exhibits can only dream of achieving. Rather than conveying the meaning of pieces in the exhibit via text or labels, this installation relies on input from visitors and their emotional responses to whatever they see, feel and hear. The result is a highly subjective experience where each visitor.

There are examples throughout the installation where there are brief, unexpected instances that catch a visitor’s attention and provoke his/her curiosity. These surprising occurrences ensure that even on long visits the visitor’s interest in the exhibit will remain, as there are continually new things for him/her to see and hear.

Another truly unique feature of this exhibition is that it showcases how technology can complement nature. The way flowers, waters and light are depicted through technology portray movement that mirrors the natural world. When this occurs, the technology used to create these works does not feel cold or mechanical.

This new immersive environment is a representation of Tokyo’s commitment to creative thinking about culture. This shows us that artistic expression can evolve beyond traditional parameters/boundaries/platforms by utilizing technology and innovation while still maintaining a powerful emotional connection.

The new teamLab immersive space is more than merely seeing something through the eyes of others; it is also experiencing it through your own feelings. Therefore, the experience provides all sorts of creative possibilities for people who enter through their imaginations. The magnitude of what culminates when technology and imagination are unified through immersive art.
